Battling Blackburn broken down by class
Quote:
Barcelona (six), Chelsea (five), Liverpool (two), Manchester United (one). FIFA have spoken and their verdict appeared to damn Sir Alex Ferguson's side. Or, at the very least, failed to acclaim enough of them. The 23-man shortlist for the World Player of the Year contained an exclusive set from the Nou Camp and Stamford Bridge, a pair from Merseyside and a solitary player from perhaps the planet's biggest club: Wayne Rooney.
Such lists can be determined by status rather than actual achievements over the preceding 12 months. The fame of supposed superstars appear to influence the judges. Yet for Premier League winners and Champions League finalists, it represented a slight. It reflected Ferguson's reluctance to spend the majority of the proceeds of Cristiano Ronaldo's sale on a marquee player and it highlighted the importance of Rooney.
Six days after his most ineffectual display of the season, in the 2-0 defeat at Anfield, United's talisman ended a six-week wait for a goal. Blackburn were duly dismissed as, given Rovers' failure to take a point on their travels this season, they were expected to be. And along the way, Rooney reiterated his importance to the United cause.
His 87th-minute finish was beautifully taken, a first-time finish diverting Anderson's enticing cross into the far corner of the net. An improvised flick could have brought an earlier strike, Rooney diverting Nani's corner into the side-netting.
His place among the FIFA elite is merited. A glaring absentee from their global galacticos, given his price tag and talent, was Dimitar Berbatov. It is understandable given the Bulgarian's underwhelming debut campaign at Old Trafford. An elegant waster for some, a misunderstood master for others,Berbatov polarises opinions as adeptly as he controls a ball.
He can do so within the space of the same game. Berbatov spent the first half spurning chances. In the second, he conjured a finish of breathtaking brilliance, meeting Patrice Evra's shot with a flick, a turn and a volley, producing placement, precision and panache in an instant. "The quality of Berbatov's flick and volley into the bottom corner was great from their point of view," said Sam Allardyce. "Berbatov has scored a fantastic goal," added Sir Alex Ferguson. Yet it was just a fourth of the season, a meagre tally for a player of Berbatov's ability in a team of United's capabilities. It is an indication that the supply line can be improved - and with Nani exasperating with his wastefulness, it certainly could today - and an indictment of his finishing on other occasions.
But as Ferguson recognised in a lengthy and costly pursuit, he possesses something defiantly different. In sacrificing Carlos Tevez and selling Ronaldo, Berbatov's idiosyncrasies have acquired a greater importance in a side that may be sprinkled with too little stardust (for FIFA's liking anyway).
A 12th win in 14 games is hardly cause for concern, yet the two-goal margin made this United's biggest home victory of the season. They retain the habit of overcoming opponents, but none have been crushed at Old Trafford yet in this campaign.
"It was a good sound solid performance," said Ferguson. "I thought we worked very hard." Indeed, industry was among United's attributes tonight. While Nani, selected to add flair, provided frustration, Antonio Valencia's speed proved more profitable on the opposite flank.
A clean sheet satisfied the manager, especially as it was achieved by a second-string central defensive pair. "If you've got Wes Brown and Jonny Evans as your back-up you're not too bad," Ferguson added. "If you take Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic out of the partnerships in all the division, there's not too many better than Brown and Vidic."
Blackburn, however, felt the shutout was a consequence of a poor decision. Referees have become a cause of controversy at Old Trafford of late. This time, however, the criticisms came from the visiting manager, while Ferguson's opinions are unlikely to provoke an inquest at the FA.
At the start of added time, one Blackburn substitute - Benni McCarthy - shot and after Edwin van der Sar saved, another - Nikola Kalinic - converted the rebound. He was wrongly ruled offside. "He was so far onside it is unbelievable that the assistant referee got it wrong," moaned Allardyce. "It wasn't even close. People will say 'Sam's moaning again' but I like to moan when I know I'm right. And I've been right for ten years managing at this level."

Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Ji-sung Park and Ryan Giggs will definitely miss Tuesday's Champions League tie with CSKA Moscow, while Dimitar Berbatov is a doubt after suffering a kick on the knee-cap in United's weekend win.
Wayne Rooney's involvement is also up in the air after wife Coleen was admitted to hospital ahead of the birth of their first child. However, it's not all bad news: Darren Fletcher is definitely back having recovered from an injury picked up on international duty last month.
"Darren was a substitute on Saturday and will play on Tuesday," the boss told media at his pre-match press conference.
"I think most people recognise Fletcher as a big-game player. We’ve been aware of that for quite a while. Now there’s an acceptance among most people that he’s a very important player for us.
"He has been missed in some key games recently so it will be good to have him back."
Sir Alex had less reason to smile about Rio Ferdinand.
"I can only clarify that he has a calf injury and they can be troubleseome," he said. "If you don’t rest and give it the proper treatment then you can end up in the situation we’ve been in where you’re playing players in games when they’re not 100 per cent fit.
"He’s doing some good work and hopefully we’ll see improvement [before our game against Chelsea on Sunday]."

He spent 12 months at the Bernabeu earlier in his career and Michael Owen hopes to be back there again next May, this time with the Reds.
Last season's Champions League runners-up can seal qualification for the knock-out stages with a win over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
With doubts over the availability of Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, Owen is likely to start against the Russians as the Reds look to secure a fourth consecutive European victory.
Having never won the competition, the 29-year-old is relishing the opportunity to play his part in the Reds' quest for Champions League glory and is desperate to help his team-mates book a third consecutive final spot in Madrid next May.
"It’s everybody’s dream [to win the Champions League] and coming to a club like Manchester United you’re always competing at the top level," he told reporters at United's pre-match press conference.
"That's one of the things you look at when you’re first asked to join the club. It’s one of the big things that stuck in my mind – playing in big European games and top League games is everybody’s dream.
"It’s very difficult to win these competitions but it’s our aim to do that and it’s exciting to be part of it."
Four months into his United career, Owen says he feels completely at home at Old Trafford and is pleased with his progress to date.
"I've loved every minute of it. It’s been everything and more from what I expected," he insists.
"Everybody has been so welcoming, right from the coaching staff, the canteen ladies and the kit man, not to mention the lads and the fans. I’m really pleased that the fans seem to have taken to me and sang my name.
"I feel like I’ve been here many years even though it’s only been a few months. I think I’ve been fit for most of my time here – I’ve only missed one game. It’s important to feel part of the squad when you join a new club and I'm loving every minute of it at the moment."

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has missed training on Monday morning as speculation grows that his wife Colleen is set to give birth this week, according to a report by Press Association.
The baby is already overdue, and should his wife give birth this week then it is almost certain that Rooney would miss Tuesday night's Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow.
Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov also missed the morning's training session, whilst Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand's absence was less surprising after the duo missed Saturday's 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.
Park Ji-Sung did train after his recent problems with fluid on his knee – it's good news for the champions as the Korean was expected to be out for another fortnight.
United go into Tuesday's clash at Old Trafford with maximum points from their opening Champions League group games, and it is unlikely that manager Alex Ferguson will risk any of his players' fitness with a crucial Premier League game at Chelsea next Sunday.

Rafael Benitez's future as Liverpool manager is again the source of speculation - and while all that I am hearing from the Anfield hierarchy suggest he is in no danger of losing his job, results dictate everything.
I will never advocate the sacking of any manager because I was someone who never had the bottle to do the job, but Benitez is under pressure. This is not me saying it - the facts, in the shape of poor results, are saying it.
If you lose six games out of seven as Liverpool manager you are under pressure. You cannot hide from it. If Liverpool's season is finished at the start of November, FA Cup apart, do not try and tell me Benitez is not under pressure.
606: DEBATE
No matter how you look at it, it comes back to Rafa
NooNoo_Coch
It makes the Champions League game against Lyon on Wednesday and home league games against Birmingham and, particularly, Manchester City of huge significance now.
I tipped Liverpool to win the Premier League before the start of the season. This was not a prediction based on old Anfield loyalties - it was based on the evidence of what I had seen from Liverpool in the last three months of last season.
Benitez, after the way Liverpool had taken Real Madrid apart in the Champions League at Anfield, looked to have discovered the way to play against teams at home - namely by going out, penning them in and battering them.
Liverpool had enjoyed good results against the other top four sides while Manchester United were inevitably weakened by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. People talk about Eric Cantona and Thierry Henry, but Ronaldo was the biggest player ever in the Premier League, so United were never going to replace what he gave them.
I really felt this was going to be Liverpool's season, but there is not just a difference in the level of performances from week to week, there is a chasm. In the space of six days, they performed magnificently against Manchester United and then more or less went down without a fight at Fulham.
Liverpool have missed the midfield creativity of Xabi Alonso
Lots has been made of the departure of Xabi Alonso. I believe this has been a factor, but when I hear people suggest he was Liverpool's best player last season I almost laugh out loud. If Alonso was better than Gerrard last season, then I never kicked a ball in my life.
Liverpool missed a trick by not signing Gareth Barry. He was desperate to come to Liverpool at one point and would have been perfect for them. He is English, mature, professional and can play with equal efficiency in a variety of positions. The way he has performed for Manchester City has shown what Liverpool have missed out on.
At Fulham on Saturday, the much-maligned Lucas played 12 or 14 passes forward that were as good as anything he has produced, but Liverpool were still useless. And I didn't see Alonso on the pitch when Liverpool played so well the previous Sunday against Manchester United. So, yes, Alonso's departure has been a factor, but it must not be over-stated.
Benitez spent his big money in the summer on Roma's Alberto Aquilani, but we have only seen 15 minutes of him in the Carling Cup at Arsenal because of injury and illness. He played one ball over the top that was world-class, but we wait to see more.
At the end of last season, Liverpool had a wonderful spine running down the team. Pepe Reina is an excellent keeper, then you had Jamie Carragher in central defence, Alonso and Javier Mascherano in midfield, and then Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres further up the pitch.
If you took the two best players out of any top side, it would have an effect but would not be catastrophic... if you take Gerrard and Torres out of Liverpool's team, it is all over
Alonso's gone, Gerrard and Torres have been injured, and Carragher has not been at his best. This is the time when others need to step up to the plate, but they haven't done it.
The best Liverpool sides I played in had rotten days even when we were winning silverware with regularity at home and abroad. But then it was a case of thinking "we're all in this together", rallying around and coming out fighting. That was not the case at Fulham at the weekend. Then there was a lack of fight - and that can't happen at Liverpool Football Club.
After a superb end to last season, Liverpool rightly looked at areas they could improve, and the obvious one was out wide. Benitez addressed this by signing Glen Johnson.
He has done well, but Emiliano Insua has struggled on the other side. He is only a boy and we must bear that in mind, but at the moment I cannot understand why Benitez keeps playing him. To get the balance right out wide, maybe something has been sacrificed in other defensive areas, a problem made worse by Carragher and Martin Skrtel struggling more than Liverpool are used to.
Liverpool never really had to worry about central defence before, it just worked. There has been a lack of confidence this season and mistakes have been made that were not being made before.
Benitez has been unlucky in that Daniel Agger, one of the young players of real quality you can see coming through at Liverpool and becoming a real stalwart, has been injured so often.
Daniel Agger's injury problems have hit Liverpool hard this season
Carragher was immense in the win against Manchester United at Anfield, but I thought Agger was magnificent. He has been a real loss. For him to come back in, show his quality, and then go out injured again is a real stroke of ill-fortune.
The big problem for Benitez has been his signings in what you might term the mid-range bracket - and this only highlights the over-reliance on the two players of unquestionable world-class talent in Gerrard and Torres.
If you took the two best players out of any top side, it would have an effect but would not be catastrophic. If you take Gerrard and Torres out of Liverpool's team, it is all over.
I looked at the Liverpool team at Craven Cottage and I can bet my bottom dollar that Fulham would have really fancied their chances. Never underestimate the impact a team-sheet can have on the opposing dressing room.
You might see Gerrard and Torres on the Liverpool team-sheet and still be confident you can beat them, but inside you will know you will be up against two players who can win matches against any team in the world. This has an effect.
Sooner or later, Liverpool have to find players who can take responsibility when they are not playing. You have Reina, Carragher and Mascherano, but where are the others?
This is where Benitez's buying has to be questioned. He made a wonderful signing in Torres at the top end of the market, but the percentage of success in the £3m-£10m category is not high enough. You're not asking for it to be unrealistically high, but you're asking for it to be higher than it has been under Benitez.
606: DEBATE
We need to get behind Rafa, I believe it will all come good
Deescouser
Agger can be counted as a success, while Reina is a top keeper, but there are not too many successes elsewhere.
You could argue that Liverpool should be in the market for £20m or £30m players on a regular basis to get around that problem, but that's another story involving other parts of the club.
Benitez's substitutions came under attack at Fulham, particularly the decision to take Torres off when it was 1-1, but I wouldn't criticise the manager too much for that. Torres was really struggling and Benitez had to weigh up whether to continue playing him and face the prospect of losing him for several weeks.
Other substitutions can be questioned, though, such as Yossi Benayoun's on Saturday and during the defeat against Lyon in the Champions League.
The results Liverpool have had mean Benitez is inevitably under pressure and some pivotal games are coming up.
The worry for me is that while pivotal games in April or May are fine, pivotal games in October, November, December and so on. The forthcoming matches vital for Liverpool and Benitez.

Ah, the ups and downs of football.
A week ago, we all felt desolate after United’s no-show at Anfield. Now, it’s as if that miserable day in Merseyside never happened. Liverpool have crashed out of the Carling Cup and chalked up yet another Premier League defeat that surely leaves their title hopes in tatters. Meanwhile, United navigated a tricky trip to Barnsley and produced a regulation victory against Blackburn. It’s just a shame Jamie Carragher was sent off a week late!
The match reports from Saturday insist United laboured to victory. I think that’s a shade unfair. Indeed, I would argue that the 2-0 victory perfectly illustrated the strength in depth of United’s squad. There was no Ferdinand, Vidic, Neville, Giggs, Park or Hargreaves but it barely mattered. Brown and Evans dealt superbly with everything that Blackburn launched at them and contributed strongly to the all-important clean sheet.
And Gabriel Obertan’s cameo hinted at a bright Old Trafford future. Although, after speaking to Michael Carrick after the game, the young Frenchman could face a bit of stick on the training ground at Carrington this week after his glaring miss!
Talking of bright futures, long after the final whistle on Saturday I emerged from the tunnel at Old Trafford to see a deserted stadium apart from three figures in the penalty area. It was Darren Fletcher and his twins. Naturally they had their dad’s no.24 shirt on their backs and took great delight from scoring in front of the Stretford End!
Darren was on the bench on Saturday and I just hope he's fully fit for Chelsea on Sunday. Carlo Ancelotti’s team have been frightening at home this season so United face a real test. Fletcher was badly missed at Anfield; we need him at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea and United go head-to-head for Villa
Chelsea will make a £33million bid for Valencia's super Spanish striker David Villa - but he would rather go to rivals Manchester United. Roman Abramovich has approved a mega bid for the hitman who will be sold by his hard-up club in the next transfer window, and a top agent has been brought in to do the deal. The Stamford Bridge outfit are planning the raid and hope to have their transfer ban lifted or suspended to let them bring the superstar to London at the second attempt. However, the Villa camp have revealed that they have already turned down Chelsea once - in the last window - and the player would still prefer to go to United. A source close to the star said: "David was approached about the Chelsea move in the summer but did not fancy it. He was not sure how often he would play or whether they played his style. Manchester United is his first choice in England, but there is a problem with that because of the price and his age. If it can be agreed with Valencia he would sooner go to Old Trafford."
Alan Nixon, Daily Mirror
The Daily Mail claims United will offer £12million to Schalke for German international goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who Sir Alex Ferguson allegedly sees as the perfect long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar.
Meanwhile, former United star Cristiano Ronaldo is not relishing the prospect of facing the Reds in this season's Champions League. The Real Madrid winger is quoted by The Times as saying: “I don’t want to play United [in the knockout rounds] — they’re a very strong team and I have many friends there. I played for six years at Old Trafford and have many friends at the club, but maybe if we met in the final it would be good. It will be very difficult if we play against United but to be honest I don’t want to play them."
ho..ho..lama tak komen..view je..sibuk sikit takde masa...obertan debut rasanya oklah cuma finishing je lemah mungkin nervous atau lama tak main..boleh lah buat umpan naikkan semangat nani tu yang belum sampai tahap yang kita expected.silap silap kena jual mamat tu summer ni..SAF buka boleh kira...
2. He..he.. aku antara bukan antara pengkritik Valencia macam Bok,Prolepak dll..tapi aku respek 'point' dia orang, memang bukan 'true' Winger.Aku rasa overall prestasi Valencia dah meningkat ,sebab tu tak de lagi dgr kutukan 2 keras kat sini.Dia kena gunakan aset kelajuan nya dgn sepenuhnya dan finishing nya setakat ni boleh tahan banyak 'on' target walaupun kadang kadang tak gol..
3.Game lawan chelsea yang ditunggu tunggu...antara benchmark nak tgk prestasi Man U awal season ni..selepas frust.. kalah ngan liverpool harap harap dapat kalah kan chelsea ataupun at least draw..memang betul kalah still dapat kejar menang league tapi satisfaction kalahkan top four ni lain macam sikit..termasuk lah bagi peminat peminat sebagai modal untuk lawan kutukan team lain..he..hee

Sir Alex Ferguson is happy that his midfielder Darren Fletcher is finally getting the acclaim that the Manchester United manager feels he deserves.
Fletcher has been with the Red Devils his entire career, but there were questions over his ability early on when he was a fringe player in Ferguson's squad.
However, the Scot has since gone on to establish an excellent reputation among the United fans, and more than a few observers attributed the club's loss to Barcelona in the Champions League final to his absence.
A similar assessment was made with regard to the performance put out by the Old Trafford outfit during their recent capitulation to Liverpool at Anfield.
"Most people now recognise Darren Fletcher as a big-game player," Ferguson is quoted by the Press Association as saying.
"We have been aware of that for quite a while. Now he is getting an acceptance that he is a very important player for us.
"Our fans see that he is a key player in major games. That has been very important to the lad because it gives him a confidence.
"He has been missed in some key games recently and yes, it is great to have the boy back."
midfield yg available.. carrick, anderson, obertan, nani, valencia, scholes, fletcher untuk mlm nie
game approach yg aku suka bila man utd player wat iaitu .. almost semua player rajin kebas bola dari kaki oppo termasuk berbatov masa vs blackburn
moment of obertan..
1. obertan dapat bola dari bawah bawak lari ke atas sampai gol post oppo tapi weak masa shoot..
2. obertan dapat bola dari rooney masa kat semi circle.. bawak sampai depan goal oopo try to cross to berbatov.. was block..
3. obertan dapat bola dari evra masa 2 2 lari ke atas on counter attack.. obertan nak cross ke rooney.. was block
4. valencia pass to oshea then pass balik ke valencia.. valencia buat run.. terus cross ke owen.. owen turn untuk shoot tapi obertan selisih kat situ... obertan try .. jauh ...dari target..
