Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels that the furore following France's controversial victory over the Republic of Ireland this week shows just how serious the need for technology in football has become.

The Frenchman shares the discomfort of many of his countrymen with the way in which Thierry Henry's handball helped Les Bleus reach next summer's World Cup finals.

However, rather then pointing the finger at individuals he feels the situation now demonstrates just how much match officials need the help that cameras can provide.

"Football accepts that a billion people see it, one guy doesn't see it and it is the one who prevails. It cannot work," he told ArsenalTV.

"We cannot accept that an obvious decision is wrong because we do not want to give ourselves all the needed help we can have in the modern game.

"Being at the game, I saw the referee giving a goal knowing that something was wrong and that is really sad.

"He didn't see it, I can understand, the linesman didn't see it, but they couldn't get any help.

"In the end, he gave a goal, already knowing that it wasn't a goal. We cannot accept that in our sport and you have to do something about it."

Wenger thinks that the reaction of the Irish team showed just how grave referee Martin Hansson's error was.

"For two reasons; first of all Henry didn't celebrate at the start, that gives an indication to the referee, but spontaneously 11 Irish players came to see the referee," he added.

"That doesn't happen if it's not something obvious. You have two, three or four but not 11 and that convinced him to go and see the linesman as well and say 'Listen, I didn't see what happened, can you help me?'

"The linesman as well didn't see it, then what could help him is somebody outside, the fourth official.

"In my opinion the referee should keep control of the game, but when he wants help he has that resource available," he said.

"We cannot sort out all the cases but we have to sort out as many cases as we can.

"For the sense of justice it is quite embarrassing to see. I think even France is embarrassed.

"We didn't play well at all and we won the game and won the qualification with a goal that was not a goal."

Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson has echoed the thoughts of his Arsenal counterpart, Arsene Wenger, asking for video technology to be introduced to the game to help referees. Fergie believes that there's too much at stake in football today for mistakes to be made.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's biggest transfer error was not signing Fernando Torres when he had the chance, according to former striker Andy Cole.

The Spanish forward had been on United's radar for a number of years before he signed for Liverpool in 2007, but according to Cole, Ferguson decided against completing a deal because he believed Torres' fee outweighed his potential.

The 25-year-old eventually moved to Anfield for £26 million and with 60 goals in just over two seasons has proved his worth and the Scottish manager wrong.


"I know Manchester United watched him closely but decided that given the likely fee he would not be good enough to play at Old Trafford," Cole told the Mirror.

"Scouts judged him receiving the ball in all different positions and watched his reactions.

"We all make mistakes and not signing Torres was one because I've spoken to several of the current squad about him and they all say the same thing: 'Top, top player'.

"Torres stunned me when he arrived from Atletico because he settled so quickly. The Premier League is totally different to the Primera Liga, but you wouldn't know from watching Torres.

"He reminds me of Ian Rush - he seems to drift in and out of games while always remaining a threat. At time he can make out he's almost uninterested and then tunes in just like that and he's away with the ball with fantastic pace.

"Torres' game is not just about the box but he's most dangerous in there because his close control allows him to take possession in confined areas."

The paper adds that another striker is top of Ferguson's list in the January transfer window with United struggling to score goals this season.

The Old Trafford-based club are struggling to match the goalscoring abilities of their top four rivals having netted just 23 times this season compared with Arsenal (36) Chelsea (29) and Liverpool (27).

Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie is set to try an unorthodox method of treatment in a desperate bid to speed up his recovery from an ankle injury.

The Dutchman will have placenta rubbed into the damaged area by a Serbian housewife who successfully healed a former Feyenoord team-mate Danzo Lazovic.

Van Persie is expected to fly out to Belgrade on Tuesday, with the backing of manager Arsene Wenger, to seek the services of Mariana Kovacevic - who has a reputation for drastically speeding up the recovery times of those she treats.

Lazovic, now of PSV, visited the housewife last month after suffering a hamstring injury that was expected to rule him out for five weeks. But after having the placenta fluid rubbed into the affected area, the Serbian striker returned to action after just one week out.

"She is vague about her methods but I know that she first massages you for a long time with placenta fluid," Van Persie said. "I am going to give it a try.

"It can't do any harm and if it helps, it helps. I've been in contact with Arsenal's chief physio about it. The club has allowed me to have this treatment done."

Van Persie, who ruptured ligaments in his right ankle during a friendly against Italy last weekend, decided to take drastic action after two separate doctors in Holland both told the striker he faces at least six weeks out.

I have created a Rapidshare Link Resolver. It does the same as ashimaz's URL to IP.
